The tracts include: Remarks on a Late Pamphlet, entitled, Christianity not founded on Argument in a Letter to a Friend by John Leland, Presbyterian minister and theologian. The pamphlet was published in London, printed for R. Hett at the Bible and Crown in 1744. “Finis” is dated April 28th, 1743. A Second Letter Containing Remarks on a Late Pamphlet , entitled, Christianity not founded on Argument: John Leland, D. D.: London, R. Hett at the Bible and Crown: 1744 (price One Shillilng And Six-pence). **After the title page is a brief catalogue (one page, front and verso): of “Books Printed for R. Hett, at the Bible and Crown in the Poultry”: nice publisher’s decoration at the end of the piece. On the facing page is “just publishe’d” with a half-page notice of a book on practicing Christianity, a “Short and Plain introduction on the undertaking of the Lord’s Supper, and on the verso, new titles for R. Hett, in the Poultry. Reflections on the late Lord Bolingbroke’s Letters on the Study and Use of History especially so far as they relate to Christianity and the Holy Scriptures, to which are added, observations on some passages in those letters concerning the Consequences of the late Revolution and the State of things under the Present Establishment by John Leland, D.D.: London: Printed for Ben J. Water or tea dampness stain to bottom edge of front board. Title label is intact on spine, but beginning to crease and lift at edges. Head and tail of spine lacking (including headbands). Edges of text-block speckled red. Previous ownership signature and ink marginalia found on detached fron end-page. Toning throughout text-block; some instances of age-staining. Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678 – 1751) was an English politician, government official and political philosopher. He was a leader of the Tories, and supported the Church of England politically despite his anti-religious views and opposition to theology. He supported the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 which sought to overthrow the new king George I. Escaping to France he became foreign minister for James Francis Edward Stuart. He was attainted for treason, but reversed course and was allowed to return to England in 1723. Detached rear end-page full of manuscript notes, in ink, from previous owner.
