18th Century Chinese Imperial ‘Dragon’ Dish, Qianlong Mark & Period (1736-1795)

Description: A rare and fine work of art exemplary of Qianlong period (1735-1795) imperial porcelain making, this dish is decorated with blue and white ‘wave’ motif paired with iron red painted five claw dragons. There are in total 10 dragons on this plate, one at the front and center, and nine other smaller dragons on the back of the rim. Qianlong period pieces often featured quantity of decorative schemes in the number of nine’s. This piece as well. It can also draw connection to the number of nine being auspicious as a symbol of abundance. It is worth noting that this dish was made to recreate in the taste of Ming-style pieces, in particular, pieces during the Xuande period. (1425-1435) Xuande period is known for producing porcelains of the finest quality in Chinese history and this dragon plate is made to pay homage to Xuande pieces. Its decorative dragon patterns, lively and hair raising, are stylistically aligned with the dragon decoration from the Xuande period. In terms of technique, this dish was made through multiple firing processes. The decorated body with blue and white patterns were first fired in high temperature and solidify the cobalt blue patterns which leaves blank to the dragon. Then the dragons at the front and back is outlined and rendered beautifully with iron red color pigment. Then the painted dish underwent a second firing in the kiln, this time in much lower temperature so as to endure and solidify the delicate iron red enamel. It’s worth noting that such production processes were extremely complex and demanding, and only the most skilled potters in Jingdezhen is able to produce such a fine piece. This exquisite dish is a true piece of history. Crafted in China during the Qianlong period, it features a stunning dragon design that is sure to impress any collector.
