Description: A beautiful olive green toned example of the inaugural design first year and type issue of the iconic Buffalo Nickel. The 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel is a specific variety of the Buffalo Nickel series. The Buffalo Nickel, also known as the Indian Head Nickel, was designed by James Earle Fraser and was minted from 1913 to 1938. There are two distinct varieties for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel: Type I and Type II.Key features of the 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel include:Raised Mound: On the reverse (back) of the coin, under the buffalo, there is a raised mound. This feature is characteristic of the Type I variety. FIVE CENTS Inscription: The denomination "FIVE CENTS" is located on the raised mound, and it is separated from the buffalo by a space. Mintage: The 1913 Buffalo Nickel Type I was minted in Philadelphia (no mintmark) and Denver (D mintmark). The Denver mint issued fewer coins than Philadelphia, making Denver minted coins generally scarcer.Composition: The coin is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. Designer's Initials: James Fraser's initials, "F" on the obverse (front) of the coin, are located on the truncation of the Indian's neck. The Type I Buffalo Nickel was replaced later in 1913 by the Type II, which featured a design modification to address issues related to the die's longevity. On the Type II, the mound was flattened to address striking problems encountered with the Type I design.
