1930s AO Hexagon Vintage Eyewear Glasses 1/10 12K Yellow Gold Fill Frames + Case

Description: Bifocal rimless Yellow Gold 12K filled with hexagonal lenses with original case. Marks here are somewhat confusing, but will default to Gold Filled. On the Nose bridge, the marks start with a circle with a horizontal line (see last photo). This is AO's symbol for 10K gold. What follows is standard marks, "AO" (American Optical) and 1/10 12K G.F. (gold filled). So what is 10K and what is gold filled? Inside of upper rim above lenses says Full-Vue C342. Comes with the vintage brown case unidentified for prescribing optometrist. Case reads "Dr. A. R. Johnson, Optometrist, Corsicana, Texas". I am not certain this is the original case which came with these glasses. Glasses Dimensions: Temple length: 4.25" Width: 4.25" Bridge: 5/8” at narrowest, 7/8" at wider bar above nose Lens: 1.75" Wide x 1 5/8" Tall Case Dimensions:5.25" Long x 2.25” Wide x 0.75” DeepCondition: Both Metal & Lens portions of frames are in very good used condition. Metal is clean and brightly polished, with two spots of verdigris on the temple screws (no attempt to clean). No temple wraps. Nose pads are fair, with interior cracking but no soiling. Lenses free of cracks, chips, flakes, or visible issues. I see no reason these could not hold a new Rx. Case is in good serviceable condition, with clean intact velvet on the interior. Prescribing doctor's gold imprint clear and not eroded. Normal wear and tear, without loss of covering, on exterior. Material over hinge beginning to fray.Many people ask us, what is the difference between gold filled glasses and gold-plated eyeglasses? Gold filled is a heavy plating process where 5 to 10 percent of the eyeglasses are real gold. Gold-plated on the other hand is a very light coating, often 100 times less than gold filled eyeglasses. The gold-plated coating is very inexpensive as it has little actual gold content and therefore is common today on eyeglasses as well as on many other types of jewelry. Another type of gold filled eyeglasses is called rolled gold plated, or RGP. The vintage eyeglass frames usually had much less gold content, often 1/30 10k. or so, so the value was much lower. 1/10 12k gold means that the frames are 10 percent of 12 karat gold, or 5% of solid gold which is 24 karat. 1/10 12k was the most common type of gold filled glasses made in the US. In the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe frames were often made of 1/20 10k, which is 5 Percent of 10 karat or about 2 percent of 24 karat solid gold.Always happy to pass through discounts on combined shipping.
