This original newspaper contains a bold banner headline: "ARABS CALL GENERAL STRIKE" with coverage of the opposition of Arabs in Palestine to large scale immigration of Jews to Palestine in the aftermath of WW II and THE HOLOCAUST. This protest came shortly after the release of a report by a US-British committee (the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry) in support of large scale Jewish immigration from post-Holocaust Europe to Palestine. After the end of the Second World War, the British government resumed its efforts to reach a solution to the question of Palestine. In November 1945 it called for the formation of an Anglo-American committee to examine the situation of the Jews in Europe and discuss the problem of Palestine. The committee, established in March 1946, visited Palestine and met with representatives of the Arab Higher Committee. On April 30, 1946, it issued its report, which called for permitting the immigration of 100,000 Jews to Palestine, and for retaining the British mandate, pending its replacement by a UN trusteeship. The Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry (whose formation was announced by Ernest Bevin on 13 November 1945) arrived in Palestine during the first week of March, 1946. Its report, published on 20 April, 1946 made the following recommendations: admission of 100,000 Jewish immigrants into Palestine; abolition of the Land Transfers Regulations of 20 February 1940, which protected Palestinians against Zionist land acquisition; that Palestine "shall be neither a Jewish state nor an Arab state"; that, given the hostility between Jews and Arabs, the Mandate should continue, pending trusteeship under the United Nations . The report triggers Palestinian strikes.Very good condition. This listing includes the complete entire original newspaper, NOT just a clipping or a page of it. STEPHEN A.
