Jamaica gained independence from the UK in 1962, but 1969 was the first year that Jamaica issued its own decimal coinage. Prior to 1969, Jamaica used UK Sterling coinage: pennies, sixpence, schillings, and half crowns. The obverse features an early portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
