Description: "Promenade, 1894" Source: Vuillard, published in 1968 Description Title: "As are the other panels of the Natanson series, this idyllic scene of children playing in a park under a cloudless sky is painted in distemper, a medium in which powdered colors are mixed with glue and water without the addition of oil. Although not widely employed by artists, it has the merits of being easy to handle, relatively cheap, and extremely permanent. "A splendid material," wrote one expert in the field. "For atmosphere unequaled, and for strength as powerful as oil, in half an hour you can do with it that which in water or oil would take one or two days." Distemper, or colle as it is referred to in French, is particularly used by scene and poster painters and found special favor with Vuillard, who learned the technique in the early 1890s when he was painting theater sets for Lugné-Poe's Théâtre de l'Oeuvre. Unfortunately the sets have long since been destroyed, but what he discovered during their execution remained for long years in his art. Distemper suited Vuillard's painting temperament, and he used it for almost every large painting he ever made. The colors dried fast, facilitating constant retouching by means of which a subject would mature to its final state under the guidance of his precise and detailed memory. The continuing freshness of Vuillard's pictures done in this medium, which he often combined with gouache and pastel, testifies to his technical abilities and knowledge of what suited him best."
