Description: We are pleased to offer an exceptionally nice 19th c. signed and dated 1863 Barber's shaving or blood letting pewter bowl for this listing. It is a smaller size measuring 8” x 6 ¼” x 1 ¼” d. and having a crimped pie crust rim. On the rim at the top are the initials that appear to be “A .Th. B. 1863.” There is a ring on the back for hanging the bowl. This was a very utilitarian object so there are some small dents and dings, but overall is is in very good condition and will display well. There is a notch cut in which to place the chin to prevent water and soap from ruining the customer's clothing during a shave. For blood letting which was a popular medical practice at the time the notch was placed under the arm just above the elbow to drain as much as a quart or more of blood to re-balance the humours and restore health. (Which almost never worked!) Please enjoy the photos for the best look.Be sure to view all the photos.
