Description: 26 hand carved Japanese signature seals with their storage case. Almost all the hankos are made from boxwood. One is made of stone (The square one) These came from a business that sold sake, Japanese rice wine. The name of the business was "Kurata Sake Merchant Store" Kurata being the owners family name, His full name was Ikutaro Kurata. His shop was in Ise city in Mie prefecture and he had a business that required shipping. The hankos are generally shipping terms Eg: "Cash and carry" & "Pay shipping cost when goods received" Most have a notch on one side which indicated which side was the top. Many aslo have what was written stamped or written on the wood body These would have been used / carved from the late 1800's to the early 1900's Based on the construction of the carrying case we think these are from the early 1900's/ The case is made of chestnut and is of solid construction. The front latch still latches and locks. The carrying handle is also solid and can be used to carry (photo # 8) The case with all of the hankos is, 8 1/4" wide, 5 1/4 deep and 4 3/4 Inches high. It weighs just under 4 pounds We have been selling Japanese antiques for 26 years and are shipping from Los AngelesWe have other antique/vintage Japanese items on ebay. Please see our "Other" items.
