Antique European Maritime Landscape Painting

Description: Found at an estate sale, this intriguing antique 12” x 16” framed painting on gray paperboard shows a tranquil maritime landscape with a peasant woman in traditional dress, a cow resting in the grass, and a fisherman mending his nets beside a quiet bay. A castle stands on a distant hill to the left and merchant sailing vessels are docked at a small town on the far side of the bay. This painting is framed without glass in a 14.5” x 18.75” wood frame. The second photo shows a 12” ruler for scale. The colors of this painting are bright and vibrant but at some point the surface has acquired a deep horizontal scratch at the upper left corner (see detail photo). As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn't able to learn anything about the artist or about the age and history of this lovely painting. I would guess it to be around a century old because gray paperboard panels like this were popular with artists in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The square-rigged wooden merchant vessels are from the Golden Age of Sail, which ended in the 1920’s and 1930’s. A friend has suggested that this scene is on the Baltic Sea. The backing board has some writing on the back that’s difficult to make out. The best I can do is “[indeciperable] gelt”, which I take to be German, and “20 C”. A composite photo shows this writing digitally enhanced in two different ways. Over the years the frame has unfortunately acquired some minor damage (see photos). This framed picture weighs 1 lbs. 12 oz., making it easy to hang.
