Description: Association française d'action artistique, Musée national des arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie, and France. Ministère de la coopération et du développement. 1989. Art makondé: tradition et modernité. Paris: Ministère des affaires etrangères, Secrétariat d'etat aux relations culturelles internationales, Association française d'action artistique: Ministère de la coopération at du développement. Text in French and Portuguese Very handsomely designed bilingual catalog of an exhibition at the Musée national des arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie, Paris. While there are many publications on Makonde art they tend to focus on the more contemporary modernist sculptures. This publication is devoted to the lesser known traditional form of masks, figures, and utilitarian objects of the Makonde. to a "transitional" phase showing changes in the transitional form as a result of the colonial encounter, and to the contemporary art form. The catalog is lavishly illustrated with often full page primarily color images and accompanied by essays by leading French and Portuguese scholars. See images for a TOC. The Makonde people of Mozambique and Tanzania are fascinating, with their rich cultural heritage and artistry. Their wood carving skills, especially in creating traditional and modern sculptures, have made them widely respected in the art world.
