Description: Chinese Mountain Folk craft Print Card with Envelope The 5.5" x 4.25" print is adhered on the top edge to a 6.25" x 5.125" folding card. A friend brought this print back from China years ago as a gift. I never got a chance but my plan was always to separate the exquisite print from the card and frame the print. Well that never happened, it did sit on my shelf for many years where I at least was able to appreciate the craftsmanship. Maybe, if you are the one who purchases it you'll want to frame it. Folk prints are popular among the Chinese people. Throughout the vast countryside in China, a great variety of folk prints can be seen all over the place, on doors, walls, over the stoves and so forth, especially during the Chinese New Year. These come in various shapes and forms such as charms, gods, theatrical scenes, historical stories, etc. They are all colorful and ornamental and carry with them a great number of themes, all of which convey a blessing and a good wishes. The Chinese folk prints are rather crude and cheap-looking compared to the Japanese prints Ukiyo-e. This is because they are not meant to last long and are to be replaced by new ones at the end of the year. However, like all good folk arts, they have a certain artistic touch to them which is absent in fine arts. This represents the collective expression of the people which is a combination of festivity, joy, good fortune, etc. Contrary to the general method of print making, the paper is applied to the wooden printing block rather than having the block pressed against the paper. A special hand press made out of palm fibre or bamboo sheath is used for rubbing against the back of the paper to take the imprint out of the blocks. Invariably 5 bright colors are used and these are vermillion, green, purple, pink and yellow in addition to black which forms the master line, and each demands a separate block. In other words, a total of 6 blocks are used to make an individual print. Please see and examine all pictures for details, they are considered part of the description.
