Description: General Order No. 156, issued by Head-Quarters, Department of the Cumberland, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, June 22, 1863. Measures about 4 3/4" x 8". The order concerns the court martial of Private James Brooks of Company C, 2d Battalion, U.S. Infantry, for sleeping at his post while on sentry duty. Brooks was found guilty and sentenced to be "SHOT TO DEATH WITH MUSKETRY." However, the sentence was disapproved by the officer who ordered the court convened. The charges against Brooks were terminated based on a procedural technicality and the prisoner was "released from arrest and will be returned to duty." A close call! Perhaps they wanted to scare the soldiers into staying awake? Condition is very nice. The paper is supple and well-preserved. The page has two holes punched into the left side, where it was once held in a ring binder. There is slight curling at the left and top edges, which does not affect the text. The back of the page is blank. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
