All the Year Round was a weekly literary journal founded and owned by Charles Dickens. The magazine serialised novels as well as containing articles on a wide range of subjects such as science, poetry, history, geography etc. These two volumes contain the true first edition of A Tale of Two Cities published in 1859 and 1860. In addition to A Tale of Two Cities volume 2 also contain the the first first chapters of Woman in White written by Wilkie Collins and The Haunted House by Charles Dickens. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens First Edition, Volume 1 contains journals 1 to 126 a total of 624 printed pages. Volume 2 contains journals 27 to 50 a total of 568 printed pages + 48 pages for The Haunted House. Volume 2 has 2 pages of advertising to front and back of book. Volume 1 was published in 1859 and volume 2 in 1860 by Chapman and Hall. Both books are in their original green cloth binding with embossed title to covers and gilt lettering to spine. Condition The books are in good original condition for their age. With Volume 1 there is staining to the edges of pages from beginning to 106 which is away from the text block. There is an area of water damage and small tears to the bottom of pages in volume 2 most noticeable after page 567, this is away from the text block and does not effect either of the 2 stories. The binding of the books are firm and in good condition. We have included a number of photos below in order that you can judge the condition of the books.
