Description: Saw them at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles around 2003-4. I had friends who worked there, so we back-alleyed in, Henry Hill style, and hung out backstage before the show. Some nervous stagehand started flitting about, complaining that McCulloch was nowhere to be found. "We can't find Ian!" was the murmur; he had been drinking, apparently, and now he was lost in LA. It was classic Echo and the Bunnymen funny business. Shortly before the show (and noticeably inebriated), McCulloch materialized, mic in hand, and turned out a banger. I'm sure the tour managers were relieved, but they needn't have worried: it was all part of the show, pure rock 'n roll. Now what we have here is something else: original promo tee for "Bring On the Dancing Horses" circa '85. Songs to Learn and Sing was on regular rotation in my bedroom at that time: it's one of those compilations that's so good that it lessens the appeal of the original albums. Not that those are bad, but Songs to Learn has pretty much all the greats: "Rescue," "A Promise," "Never Stop," "The Killing Moon," and of course, "Bring on the Dancing Horses"--The latter being the only new single (originally recorded for "Pretty in Pink": a timeless piece of Gen X nostalgia if you've never seen it). So here we have the cover art for the single, and the tee is absolutely gorgeous: baby blue, soft as a baby's butt, and fits like a fever dream (see pics). I have zero desire to part with this, but imma list it anyway. So bring on the dancing horses, headless and all alone...and raise your glass to Ian, while we still have him, doubtless one of the coolest motherf*ckers in the pantheon of rock n' roll. (Fun fact: the guitar riff for "Killing Moon"--it's the is exactly the same as "Space Oddity" played in reverse. Go to YouTube and type "Ian Mcculloch killing moon song stories." It's definitely worth the 4 minutes.) Echoingly dope!
