Description: DATING TO 1909 THIS PIECE WAS ACQUIRED FROM A NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND ESTATE FASHIONED OF A BEAUTIFUL DOVE GREY SILK WITH A SATIN FINISH THROUGHOUT THE SKIRTING WITH THE BOTTOM SKIRTING PLEATED WITH LARGE SOUTACHE BRAID ROUND RONDELLES RUNNING FULLY AROUND THE BOTTOM. THE RONDEL AND SOUTACHE DETAILING IS REPEATED IN THE TOP WITH ORNATE BRAIDWORK ON NET INSERTED ON FRONT AND SIDES. GATHERED SILK BELTING AROUND THE WAIST WITH A RUFFLING AT THE REAR CLOSURE. THE TOP IS IN AN OFF WHITE EMBROIDERED NET WITH LARGE PUFF SLEEVES HAVING BANDS OF GREY SILK AND VALENCIENNES LACE RUFFLES AT THE BOTTOM CUFF WITH A SERIES OF BOWS RUNNING FROM THE CUFF UP TO THE SHOULDER. ALTERNATE FLORAL LACE TRIMS THE YOKE AND HIGH COLLAR WITH METALLIC GOLD EMBROIDERED TRIM ACCENTING BOTH THE TOP AND BOTTOM EDGES. HOOK AND EYES CLOSE THE REAR CONDITION: THIS GOWN IS SOLD AS IT WAS ACQUIRED. THE INNER BODICE IS A SILK TAFFETA AND IS FULLY BONED, IT IS HEAVILY SHATTERED THROUGHOUT. THE OVERLAYING LACE HAS DEEP AGE COLOR AND THE BREAKAGE SHOWS THROUGH. THERE IS A LARGE THUMBPRINT HOLE IN THE NETTING ON THE UNDERSIDE LEFT SLEEVE.
