They were used by Army, Cavalry and Naval officers. This type of mounting was used from 1883-1945. There is a great variety of quality in the blades. Scabbards can be chromed metal, lacquered wood or leather covered wood with brass fixtures. The back strap of a naval Kyu Gunto will have no side pieces while the army and colonial swords have side pieces with various emblems most popular being the Japanese Chrysanthemum (flower). Overall, this sword is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The pommel, back-strap, quillon and knuckle-bow are all securely fastened to the hilt, but it does have a slight wiggle. They have scattered scrapes and a couple spots that look like white paint. There is a light bend midway down the guard, it is barely noticeable, but worth mentioning. Some of the gold finish remains, but most of it has turned a darker gold patina color. The wood grips have light handling marks and scuffs, but no notable wear. The twisted chord is mostly intact and bound fairly tightly in the wood grooves, but there are a few broken pieces. Those pieces are still securely in place held by the backstrap. The varnish finish is mostly intact. There is a slight bend to the blade, almost not worth mentioning. It does NOT effect the sword going in and out of the scabbard. The blade's spine, fullers and sides have light handling marks and scrapes, but no notable wear. There are no nicks or dings on the blade's cutting edge and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The blade finish has been chromed and some of it has scraped off at the tip. There are no visible manufacturer or serial number markings, but there Chrysanthemums on the sides and top rear of the pommel. There is also a floral pattern on the pommel and floral relief cut-outs at the front of the guard. The scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The suspension ring is securely fastened to the body, it swivels and rotates freely. The finish has oxidized. The throat, body and drag have scattered oxidation and scrapes. A lot of the original finish has worn off and the remaining finish has started to turn a darker gray color. The sword slides in and out correctly and easily. There are no visible markings on the scabbard. This sword and scabbard will be a great addition to your Imperial Japanese collection, or a sword collection in general.
