Description: Japanese WWII Type 19 Army company grade Officer’s parade dress Kyu Gunto Saber Company grade army officer’s parade saber featuring brass hilt with pierced floral pattern in the guard; knuckle bow joining the pommel with integral back strap. A military chrysanthemum 5-petals, showing split in relief is on the side and upper rear of the back strap. The Grip: Black Bakelite with triple strands of alternating straight and twisted brass wire wrap, some wire is loose- but all intact and original to the sword. Blade is EXCELLENT - Unmarked high polish chrome-plated single-edged blade with full-length single fuller with etched gunome hamon peaks running near the entire blade on both sides. When acquired the blade was lightly coated in cosmoline- which did a superb job in protecting the chrome blade- showing only a few very minute areas of chrome loss- This sword is TIGHT AND FIRM IN ALL- It feels good in the hand- the blade is true in all- no pitting- solid in the grip, straight, well balanced and it shows beautifully. Original nickel-plate scabbard with single carry ring. Scabbard is in good condition- with some loss to the nickel plating near the throat and ring- this had been quad-zero steel pad buffed and oiled to prevent further loss. The Guard is excellent with pleasing patina. On the inverse of upper guard, I cleaned to both look for any maker marks or “I.D.”- as well as to see how much gilding remains. By this example- probably close to 100% if the next owner chooses to clean it. I was unable to find/see any maker’s marks or other stampings - = probable WW2 made en mass. Patterned after their Western martial counterparts, these kyu gunto swords were used for parade and dress events by Army officers. Though they are by no means scarce, prices for original WWII era swords and daggers have been rising steadily as fewer and fewer WWII veterans survive. Overall length 33 5/8″, not including scabbard, and 35.5 inches with scabbard. The sword weight with scabbard is 1-pound 14 ounces. This style of mounting was used from 1883 until 1945. Like shin-gunto, a great variety of quality in both blades, traditional and machine made, and mounts is seen in kyu-gunto swords. Many variations are found in the scabbards of kyu-gunto swords including chromed metal, lacquered wood or leather covered wood with brass fixtures. Any style scabbard may have a leather field cover. The back straps of naval kyu-gunto swords have no side pieces while army kyu-gunto and colonial swords have side pieces with various emblems on the back strap.Key points about the Type 19 Kyu Gunto Saber:· Design:It typically featured a traditional Japanese katana style blade with a distinctive hilt design specific to the Type 19 model, often including ornate brass fittings and a leather wrapped grip.· "Kyu Gunto":This term signifies that it was an older style of military sword compared to the later "Shin Gunto" which was introduced during the war.· Type 19:This designation refers to the year 1919, when the design was standardized for the Imperial Japanese Army.· Officer use: This sword was primarily issued to commissioned officers in the Japanese army during World War II · " Overall this is a really nice example of this type of sword. This would make a worthy addition to any Japanese military collection. Ready to display! Shipping Data: WILL SHIPPED IN THICK CARDBOARD TUBE- BUBBLE WRAPPED SWORD- THEN PLASTIC SEALED.
