MARGARET HAMILTON - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - HFSID 259071 MARGARET HAMILTON On a visit to an ill sister, Hamilton writes a friend, thanking him for a wonderful evening. She mentions meetings with Oscar Hammerstein and George Abbott. Autograph letter signed: "Margaret (Hamilton)", 2p, 6x8, front and verso, separate sheets. New York, N.Y., Friday, no date. To "Dear Hal". In full: "I'm at my sisters - as she has been ill - and I'm borrowing her paper to talk to you!! I wanted to call you long before this & fully intended to - to thank you from my heart for such a lovely evening - and to say I'll not forget it! The room looked so lovely - the table with all its crystal & pretty dishes & cloth - the fire-light and the good good food! It was like being in a story somehow! And above - and over - it all - your warm hospitable and welcoming kindness. I felt a little selfish - having it all to myself! But how I enjoyed it!! The movie was in the mood I was in! and I appreciate all you did for me! I hope you will come & eat dinner with me soon. You seem like an old friend! Old - in the friendship way - heavens knows - not in years! I wanted also to tell you - I read for 'Show Boat' & Mr. Hammerstein asked me if I had ever been on the stage - which put me in my place!!?! & he really wanted Charlotte Greenwood - for which I can't blame him! - but I am not sure he can get her - nor that he wanted me - if he can't! 'The Pajama Game' - I read carefully through later - word by word - and tho' I read for it & they liked it I guess - & asked me to read and sing - for Mr. Abbott - I decided against it as 'Mabel' is an 'also-in-the-cast' part - & is truly unnecessary to the plot - in the production & fades out early in the second act! I may not have done much 'in the stage' - but I know what that type of part means!! So! T.V. is just doing fine! That's my report on the 'State of M.H.' Thank you again - dear - for a great deal of fun & joy! And I hope to see you again soon. Lovingly-" The unglamorous HAMILTON (1902-1985) was cast even as a young woman in roles as an old maid, gossip and housekeeper and played the foil for comedians such as W. C. Fields (My Little Chickadee, 1940) and Harold Lloyd (The Sin of Harold Diddleback, 1946). Her greatest moment in film, however, came in the dual roles of Elvira Gulch and The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz (1939). In reality a former schoolteacher who loved children, she appeared often on PBS's Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers. She was again familiar to American TV viewers as general store proprietor Cora in Maxwell House Coffee commercials of the 1970s. Lyricist/librettist OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (1895-1960) was part of many Broadway hits, and wrote Show Boat's most memorable song, "Old Man River." The most recent of three film versions of Show Boat came out in 1951, but the reference here would seem to be to the 1946 revival of the 1927 stage musical. GEORGE ABBOTT was screenwriter, producer and director of the Broadway and film versions of The Pajama Game (1954, 1957). Light show through of ink. Fine condition.
