Description: PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was a widely admired French artist who was one of the most visible and influential figures of the impressionist movement. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR EXPRESSING THE PAIN OF PAINTING IN HIS OWN ART STUDIO DUE TO HIS ILLNESS Autograph letter in French signed by Pierre-Auguste, “Renoir,” expressing the pain of painting in his own art studio due to his illness: “My dear friend, I will not be able to accept your kind invitation. I absolutely cannot budge, even going to my studio is agony. I am heartily sorry but truly it is impossible.” Renoir suffered from severe attacks of rheumatoid arthritis and other illnesses beginning in 1898. “I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT BUDGE, EVEN GOING TO MY STUDIO IS AGONY. I AM HEARTILY SORRY BUT TRULY IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.” Sent to the art dealers Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922) and Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939), contains one page on a bifolium, measures 8.25 by 5.25 inches, and in near pristine condition with only light staining. Durand-Ruel and Vollard were the first to support and bring to light the work of Renoir. Renoir also painted two of his most famous portraits of Durand-Ruel in 1910 and Vollard in 1917.
