Description: Description Title: The Dog Supper and Other Poems Author: White Eagle [aka Shields Wright] Description: Staple-bound booklet. Lightly handled. Clean and unmarked. Two illustrations from photographs. 8 pages. 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Five poems of Indian life by the Sioux poet, White Eagle (1879-1933). White Eagle was born Shields Wright near Eufaula, Oklahoma. He was deaf, taught to read and write, and eventually learned to speak, though when he did speak it was with significant difficulty. At the age of fifteen, he left the reservation, and by 1909, was working as a cowboy on the range near Gillette, Wyoming. At this time, he also contributed to local newspapers, including the Gillette News and the Cheyenne Tribune. He continued to live by the pen, and his work appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and other national publications. White Eagle was also known as a great traveler, having sojourned thousands of miles across the country, selling his writings and generating publicity for Wyoming, the Black Hills, and the Custer Battlefield Highway. He died in March 1933, killed in an accident while riding a freight train at Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Binding: Staple bound wraps Condition: Very Good Publisher: n.p.
