Description: The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man – together in one volume Vintage Books First edition 1964 – condition good – some creases on cover, slight stain at top of back cover. A former Pinkerton agent, Dashiell Hammett, 1894 to 1961, was one of the founders of the hardboiled school of detective fiction. He was also a screenwriter and political activist. In The Maltese Falcon (1930), Brigid O'Shaughnessy hires Sam Spade to find a statuette of a black falcon, which is also being sought by Joel Cairo, a crook, and the rich and sophisticated fat man Caspar Gutman, who is accompanied by Wilmer Cook, a vicious young gunman. The story was made into a motion picture three times and selected by the Mystery Writers of America in 1995 as the third best crime novel of all time. For The Thin Man (1934), Hammett created the characters of Nick and Nora Charles, a leisure-class couple who enjoy copious drinking and flirtatious banter. The novel inspired a popular movie of the same name starring William Powell and Myrna Loy, which led to five sequels.
