Description: Historical beauty. Lovely gown came from the estate of Martha Maxwell. Martha was an American naturalist,taxidermist and artist, she was a founder of modern taxidermy . Her displays are said to have influenced major figures in taxidermy history who entered the field later, such as William Temple Hornaday and Carl Akeley ( Father of modern taxidermy) Martha was born in 1831 in Pennsylvania. Among her many accomplishments,she is credited with being the first Woman Field Naturalist to obtain and prepare her own specimens. Martha was inducted into the Colorado Woman’s Hall of Fame in 1985. Gown still has Christie’s Auction tag attached . Bodice is boned and really nice shape, bow belt needs a hook and eye, some lace on front needs to be tacked back on. Skirt has minimal holes in satin but not through the black cotton lining. Waist was pinned closed, needs hook and eye. Beautiful floral brocade. Suit is strong and very wearable. Bust 32”.
