Description: I have eight of these large handmade, and hand decorated, wooden rice paddles. All show signs of gentle use and age-related oxidation. Each paddle is approximately 13 inches by 4 inches (each paddle does vary in size somewhat due to the fact that each may be similar to the others but is a unique creation). In Japan, the shamoji is also a good luck charm dedicated at Shinto shrines. For example, some are decorated with the word "hissho" (必勝, victory) written on the part that scoops up rice when praying for victory. This is because the Japanese word "meshitoru" (飯取る), which means to scoop up rice, is pronounced the same as "meshitoru" (召し捕る), which means to capture the enemy. The custom became even more famous during the Russo-Japanese War, when soldiers dedicated many shamoji to Itsukushima Shrine to pray for Japan's victory in the war. As to the shamoji offered here, the large kanji references longevity and blessings. The connection to a life sustaining staple like rice seems more obvious. Buyers can purchase one or more. The more purchased, the better the discount for shipping and price. Some of you may want to pick a specific paddle. That is great, but to keep everyone’s sanity, here are some ground rules: • The purchase of a paddle (or paddles) is as to any available paddle. The purchase does not hinge upon any particular paddle. • After making the purchase, the buyer MAY reach out to me and let me know through eBay messenger as any particular paddle desired by stating the letter(s) of the paddle(s) in the photos. I will attempt to send the buyer the specific paddle. • If for some reason I cannot send the requested paddle(s), I will send one (or more) that is available. All buyers have to agree to the above terms when buying from this lot. Again, no one required to reach out to me to select a paddle. I am making this option available for those who may want it.
